Joseph Guerrera - Abstract Artist

A lifetime of inspiration, a work in progress…

Artistry reclaimed, a journey rediscovered. After pursuing studies in Illustration & Design during the late 80s, I diverged onto a different career path, only to rediscover the flame that had burned since my early childhood.

In my artistic journey, I embark on the creation of works that emanate from the depths of personal inspiration and contemplative states of mind. My artistic expression flirts, at times, with the realm of Abstract Expressionism, though I am wary of confining my creations within the bounds of labels.

My creative spirit is kindled by diverse influences, drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of life. Among the luminaries who have left an indelible mark on my artistic ethos are Van Gogh, whose tenacity resonates with me, and Clyfford Still, whose unwavering conviction and integrity towards his body of work serve as a guiding light.

When I commence the artistic process, I often enter with a preconceived notion, only to surrender myself to the unpredictable journey of creation. The metamorphosis unfolds organically, leading to a gratifying denouement that transcends initial intentions.

Primarily employing acrylic as my chosen medium, I am captivated by its swift drying nature, compelling me to paint in the present moment. The serendipity of subsequent additions to the work reflects the ever-evolving nature of my creative impulses. Some pieces remain incomplete, suspended in a state of potential, awaiting my return to reshape their narrative.

Using a palette knife and occasionally incorporating glazes, I seek to imbue my works with a tactile and visual richness. The textured landscapes that emerge invite the viewer to engage not only visually but also through the sense of touch, fostering a multisensory experience.

The genesis of my abstract creations can be rooted in a myriad of sources – a poignant song lyric, the ebb and flow of emotions, or the imprints of recent travels. Yet, once the paint meets the canvas, the journey of inspiration unfolds and concludes with the final stroke. Titles, if provided, remain deliberately abstract, inviting viewers to weave their own narratives and interpretations, connecting the artwork to their current experiences.

In essence, my art is a testament to the fluidity of the creative process, an exploration of the interplay between intention and serendipity, inviting viewers to partake in the ever-shifting dialogue between the artist, the artwork, and their own subjective reality.

"The first thing I do whenever I do anything really creative is lose that freakin' third eye. Because you gotta just lose it all and throw it all down right there. You gotta open up a vein, and you can't open up a vein if you got all these scientists out there watching you and telling you, "Do this", or "Do that". So I started to look for ways that I would have freedom of expression without anyone hovering over me." - Cyndi Lauper

"People should look at the work itself and determine its meaning to them. I prefer the innocent reaction of those who might think that they see cloud shapes in my paintings to what [a critic] says that he sees in them." - Clyfford Still

"I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process." - Vincent Van Gogh

"What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?" - Vincent Van Gogh
